Water main repairs

Water main repairs, done properly and put back the way we found it.

A leak on the pipe that brings water into your house wastes water, runs up the bill and, given long enough, washes out the ground under a drive or a path. It does not get better on its own.

We find it, dig it out, cut the bad section out and joint in new pipe with proper fittings. Then it is pressure tested, backfilled, compacted and reinstated, whether that is turf, block paving, tarmac or a concrete step. Most repairs are done in a day.

How a repair runs

The reinstatement matters as much as the repair

Anybody can join a pipe. What people remember is whether the drive went back level, the turf went back down and the place was left tidy. Every review we have says something about that, and it is not by accident.

  • Leak located before we dig
  • Hole kept as small as the job allows
  • Proper compression fittings, never a bodge
  • Pressure tested before backfill
  • Backfill compacted in layers
  • Block paving, tarmac, slabs and turf reinstated

The repair

Once the leak is uncovered we cut out the damaged length and joint in new MDPE pipe with compression fittings rated for the job. Where the old pipe is sound either side, that is all it needs. Where it is not, we will show you and talk through the options before going further.

The supply is only off for as long as the joint takes, normally an hour or two. We tell you before it goes off and when it is back on.

Putting it back

The hole is backfilled in layers and compacted properly, so it does not sink in a month’s time. Block paving is relaid, tarmac is patched and rolled, slabs go back on a fresh bed, and turf is lifted and replaced rather than thrown away.

Where a leak sits under something awkward, a concrete step, a basement entrance, a utility box, we break out only what we have to and make it good afterwards.

When a repair is not the answer

If the pipe is lead, or the old black alkathene that splits along its length as it ages, a repair buys time rather than solving anything. We will say so. Sometimes it is still the right call for now, and sometimes a new supply pipe pulled through by mole costs less than you would think.

Questions

Water main repairs: common questions

How long does a water main repair take?

Most are done inside a day, including putting the ground back. The water is only off while the new section is jointed in, which is usually an hour or two.

Is a supply pipe repair covered by home insurance?

It depends on the policy. Many cover the cost of finding the leak (often listed as trace and access) and some cover the repair or the damage it caused. Check your policy or ring your insurer before we start, and we will give you the paperwork they will ask for.

Will you make good my drive or patio?

Yes. Reinstatement is part of the job, not an extra. Block paving, slabs, tarmac, gravel and turf all go back the way they came out.
