Is it a leak?

Six signs the problem is under the ground

Most supply pipe leaks never show on the surface. If any of these sound familiar, ring and describe it. It costs nothing to ask.

  • 01

    A bill that has jumped

Using the same water and paying a lot more for it.

  • 02

    The meter keeps turning

Every tap off and the dial is still moving.

  • 03

A letter from the water company

Their data shows a leak on your side of the meter.

  • 04

A damp patch that will not dry

Soft lawn, a wet line across the drive, water by the stop tap.

  • 05

    Pressure dropping off

Weaker flow than there used to be, with no other change.

  • 06

Water where it should not be

Coming up through paving, into a cellar or next door.

About

Craig and a van full of blue pipe

Chiltern Water Services is Craig Brownsell, based in Chalfont St Peter. Water mains are what he does: finding leaks, fixing them, and replacing the pipes that bring water into people’s houses.

Craig is a WaterSafe member and an Approved Water Supply Pipe Installer through WIAPS. That means the work is done to the water regulations, certified, and accepted by the water company without any fuss.

You get the person who priced the job on site doing it, a straight answer on whether to repair or replace, and the ground put back afterwards. That last part is what people mention most.

Whose pipe is it?

From the boundary to the house, the pipe is yours

If the water company has written to say there is a leak on your side, this is the part they mean. It is your responsibility to fix, and it is exactly the part we work on.

How a job runs

From the phone call to the turf going back

Tell us what you are seeing. A photo of the meter, the wet patch or the water company’s letter helps.

Usually within a day or two, often the same day. We find the problem and give you a clear price.

Most repairs and replacements are a single day. The water is only off for the changeover.

Questions

The things people ask first

Which pipe is mine and which is the water company’s?

In general the water company owns the main in the road and the pipe up to your boundary, usually where the meter or outside stop tap is. From there to the house, the supply pipe is yours, and so is the responsibility for keeping it in repair.

How do I know I need my water main replaced?

Repeated leaks, a lead or old alkathene pipe, low pressure that is not the water company’s fault, or a supply shared with next door. If one leak has been repaired and another turns up a few months later, replacement is usually the cheaper route in the end.

How long does it take to replace a water main?

Most houses are done in a day, including putting the ground back. Long or awkward runs can take two.

Will my water supply be interrupted during the replacement?

Only for the changeover at the end, usually an hour or two. We lay and test the new pipe while the old one is still in use.

Is water main replacement covered by home insurance?

Sometimes. Many policies cover trace and access, finding the leak and getting to it, and some cover the repair. Fewer cover a planned replacement. Check your policy, and we will give you whatever paperwork your insurer needs.

What should I do if I notice a problem with my water main?

If water is coming out of the ground, turn it off at the meter or outside stop tap and ring us. If it is a slower sign, a high bill or a damp patch, ring anyway and we will book a leak detection visit.
